I am looking for someone to help me who has had a similar experience.
Our 1 1/2 year old chihuahua had his annual set of shots yesterday morning. He had his rabies and his distemper shots, and they were administered in between his shoulder blade. He also had blood drawn from his front left leg. According to my husband, he slept pretty much the whole day, which was expected. When I got home from work, Cuervo, our dog, seemed playful and back to his old self.
This morning was a different story. He would not come out of his cage for awhile, and then when he finally did come out, he seemed very lethargic and was shaky. My husband tried to pick him up and he whined like he was hurt. When we tried to take him potty he just stood there with his ears held back and shaking. Then my husband held him in his arms and I tried to pet him around his face and he growled at me a little bit.Can someone help me figure out what is wrong with my chihuahua?
It's common for dog to be lethargic and a bit sore after a vaccination. (especially a toy breed) The vaccination challenges their immune system, so they usually run a slight fever and feel out of sorts for 24 hours or so.
If you see any swelling at the injection site, be sure to notify your vet promptly.
The blood was taken to check for the presence of heartworms. Can someone help me figure out what is wrong with my chihuahua?
he just brusied from the shot and hes still tense.same thing happened with mine.and the reason he growled at your husband is hes tense.no need to worry.wait a few days.
I think your vet is mistaken. When we take our dogs for shots, my vet tells me it hurts. We have a pomeranian that whines for about 48 hours after his shots every time. It's not unlike when you get a shot, the nurse always says, this is not gonna hurt, but it does. The more tense he was when he got his shot will also effect the soreness in his shoulder area after the shot. I'd keep an eye on him, but I think he'll be fine.
He could be having a allergic reaction. My Chihuahua is allergic to Rabies Shots. He didn't show signs until the next day though. He could be just sore around his shoulder blades from the injections. Watch him, make sure he drinks water, if he goes without eating today, that is okay. But if he isn't back to normal or near normal tomorrow, it will be time to take him back to the vet.
The blood tests may have been to check for worms and heart worms.
Well maybe you should give him time.If it doesn't quit,do what the vet said
the injection site could be sore... keep an eye on him and for sure take him to the vet if he gets worse.. I have seen pets vomit after being vacccinated as most common reation, but some get really sick
I am wondering why the vet did a blood test? is there something else wrong with him that you were testing his blood for? Blood tests are not usually done routinely as part of vaccination schedule so I find this odd
Well this kinda of happen to my Yorkie they put the shot in the wrong way so they had to do the shot again and put like a cast on the other leg and I took her to the animal hospital!!!! So I would take your dog to the animal hospital!!!!This is just a suggjestion!!!
Take to the vet don't call anymore.
chihuahuas are sensitive, mine yelps like hes being hit if i simply walk too close, he just needs more time to recover, try not to pet him near the areas where he got stuck with the needles, if it goes on for a long time though, u should get the vet to check him
Chihuahua are very sensitive dogs. The whining that he his giving you is b/c he is in pain. Some dogs have a very low pain tolerance than others. Shots do hurt dogs and they can be sore for days. When you pick him up, do it gently b/c the shots are causing a little pain for him. That is normal.
this breed of dog is yippie as it is, i would say make sure he is drinking water, and leave him be for a day or two, when he is feeling better he will come to you, sometimes dogs just want to be left alone when they are not feeling well.
don't worry to much..
some dogs, when they feel bad they will also whine and don't like to be touched, maybe he just had a headache.
you vet is right, if it isn't better in 1 or 2 days, go to the vet again.
