How to figure out the scale factor i should use in ratios?

lets say there is 30 students and the ratio of boys ans girls are 2:3 how would I figure out what the scale factor is? I know it is 8 but it took me along time to get that answer. How can I get the scale factor faster? How to figure out the scale factor i should use in ratios?
I may be wrong but isn't the scale factor 6? there are 2 boys for every three girls. So 2 + 3 = 5 and 30/5 = 6 Therefore 2*6 = 12 boys and 3*6 = 18 girls. I believe the scale factor is 6 my friend. How to figure out the scale factor i should use in ratios?
5 parts = 30

1 part = 6

2 parts = 12
