I want to get a dog, help me figure out what kind to get?

I want a small to mid-size dog that doesn't bark a lot, is playful and likes to play fetch. What kinds of dogs do you recommend?I want to get a dog, help me figure out what kind to get?

I own two Labradors, which I can tell you are dogs with a lot of energy. If you definitely have the time to take the dog out to play and burn his energy then this would be a great companion.
try this site it helped me:

i hope you did your research on the big commitment a dog is too, this site can also help you with that.

try your local shelter first, it's the right thing to rescue a dog.

if you're looking into breeders, make sure they seem like they are very knowledgeable and caring.

I personally would start doing research on gundogs, hounds and pastoral breeds and maybe terriers.

Have a read through the KC website and also visit shows where there are many breeds being shown to get an idea of what you like and you can speak to owners and breeders alike.

People have mentioned labs and various spaniels, some will be vocal others won't depends on the pup you pick from the litter and how excited you are as a person, this can help dictate how vocal a dog can be..

So many variables here, just don't get a Vizsla - lovely dogs but all the ones i have seen at shows and training are highly vocal.
Have you considered going to your local shelter? They might have a dog that has been evaluated and is exactly what you are looking for. It may not be a purebred, but there is no guarantee that a purebred will have exactly what you want.

Good luck!
I don't think there is any one 'right breed' for a person. Even dogs within the same breed can have very different personalities. I've seen all types of labs, for example... happy ones, mean ones, lazy ones, hyper ones, destructive ones, loyal ones, etc.

Go to your local shelter and take a look at each dog, ask questions. The volunteers can probably give you lots of information on their personality/activity level.

Single out the ones that interest you the most. Take them for a walk or play with them outside in an enclosure (if the shelter has one).

I guarantee you won't walk away without wanting to adopt at least one.
cocker spaniel

springer spaniel

id encourage you to check out local shelters.
Maybe try a beagle. Go to a local pet store and find one. They usually let you go into a separate room and play with the dog. Or an even better thing to do would be to go to an animal shelter and adopt one. If a beagle isn't what you want, ask a freind or family member what they think you should get. I hope this helped and good luck with your new pet!
labrador retrievers are usually pretty calm, or just go look for a calm mutt at the pound
I would recommend a few breeds that you might like.

If your looking for a dog that is a one person dog that will be very loyal to you - Italian Greyhound

I have a small dog that is full of energy, she loves everyone, she will play fetch all day if I let her- Boston Terrier

If you are looking for a very unusual dog I would recommend a Hairy Hairless Chinese Crested but this dog is not for everyone do to their looks very Good dog as well but is very pricey.

I hope that I helped you in some way.

They are both every good dogs that will love you and always try to please you.
I just got a Rat terrier mix and they are very happy going and classy dogs, a medium dog for a apartment and a small one for a house, short coat so not a lot of salon time
GET A PUG. THEY ARE SO PLAYFUL AND SUCH BIG CUDDLERS. THEY ARE REALLY GOOD DOGS. THEY STAY FROM 10 POUNDS TO 18 POUNDS. SO, THEY ARE SMALL DOGS. I HAVE 2 AND THEY ARE BOTH GREAT.
There are real good dogs from that size.such as the shitz-zu it is a small dog very calm some times and playful. It really dose not bark that much.Greyhounds are short and long eared and quiet. Bull Terriers are medium sized and really fun to play with too. Pugs are tiny and really active. There are just so many to choose from
cockerpoo....mix of cocker spaniel and poodle...these dogsare so aweet and and love fecthing and playing and hardley bark.

Try finding dogs at local shelter...dont buy one from a store
bulldogs, yorckshire terriors, springer spanials i have all three of those dogs they r fun 2 play with.bulldogs protect u so do springer spanials.right know i have 1 springer spanial 2 yorckies.1 yorck is 7 months she is playful the boy is 2 he is calm and relaxed.the springer spanial is 9 he is real jumpy he loves to play.
If you're really looking for a dog that doesn't bark, a Basenji is a good choice. These dogs don't bark at all, but they do make other sounds. Collies and boxers are really playfull, medium-sized dogs. But, just about all dogs love to play, and fetch, too!
